macOS Sierra Unlock Takes 6-8 minutes after Safari 11.0.2 Update

Hi. My Late 2009 iMac 21.5" with 12GB RAM and 256 GB SSD has been working wonderfully for the past year after installing SSD and updating to Sierra. No issues browsing web and using Office applications. However, after the installation of the Safari 11.0.2 update on Jan 9, 2018 my machine now takes between 6 and 8 minutes after entering the password to display the desktop. During this time, the dreaded beachball spins away.

Once the desktop appears, all applications work fine and are totally responsive (except Safari). They open and exit quickly. Chrome loads web pages quickly. However, Safari takes a very long time to initialize and displays as (Not Responding) in Activity Monitor. The same is true exiting Safari once it has initialized.

I have performed an SMC reset to no avail. I suspect the Safari 11.0.2 update is to blame given (A) the timing and (B) the fact that Safari is not performing correctly once the machine provides the desktop.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi,

A Safe Mode boot deletes system caches that might help after updating.

To start up in safe mode:

  1. Start or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. The white Apple logo appears on your display. If you don't see the Apple logo, learn what to do.
  2. Release the shift key when you see the login window. If your startup disk is encrypted with FileVault, you might be asked to log in twice: once to unlock the startup disk, and again to log in to the Finder.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac without pressing any keys during startup.

See if that makes a difference.

In activity monitor quit the safari process see the article Welcome to Activity Monitor on Mac - Apple Support

Clear all history and website data Clear your browsing history in Safari on Mac - Apple Support , in safari preferences keep it as off , uninstall all third party applications and login items in users and groups - keep them as empty .

Enter in user library macOS Sierra: Library folder

Delete the entire contents of folders Caches , Cookies , Saved Application State , folder Safari contents into the trash , restart and empty the trash .

in the report interface is showing as en1 it should be en 0 .

The etrecheck report is showing kernel panic and safari is hanging see these articles macOS Sierra: If your Mac restarts and a message appears

If an app freezes or quits unexpectedly on Mac - Apple Support

If a plug-in slows Safari performance on Mac - Apple Support- plugin is also a reason .

Try these steps then plan of installing the operating system once again macOS Sierra: Erase and reinstall macOS

As it will get rid all of problems in the system .

Hi Eric,

After safe mode and rebooting into normal mode, same issue of 6-8 minute delay after typing in password. Totally aggravating.

I'll try removing Arq.

Seems only option now is to not have system prompt for password after sleep and to configure system to auto login. Not the greatest for security, but 6-8 minutes to use the computer is silly.

All evidence in my view points to the Safari 11.0.2 patch. Something very suspicious here.
