Help! How can I connect my new USB-C MacBook to my old Apple LED Cinema Display?

Can anyone help? I have spent the past week attempting to connect my new MacBook to my old LED Cinema Display.

I purchased the below Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 adaptor as recommended when I called Apple support with my issue..... it did not work.
Apparently this is because the MacBook needs to be powered when projecting to a display. I then went into Apple Regent Street who were equally as stumped as to why I could not connect & sent me to Maplin to search for an adaptor as they did not have one. The Maplin guys whilst very helpful, also failed.

There doesn't seem to be an adaptor released by Apple that will do what I want it to do. i.e. Power the MacBook & provide a female Thunderbolt 2 connection for my old LED Cinema Display to plug into.

Can anybody help with a suggestion on how to get these two products connected. The below adaptor is quite close but still will not work.
