MacOs High Sierra Combo Update 10.13.3 fails

I got a notification regarding an essential update from the App Store. Opted to update all(Combo update, ITunes and Command-line tools), which seemed to have been downloaded fine. The computer restarted and the entire update finished in about 10mins. However, I discovered that after restarting the computer, I was never booted to the login screen but kept getting an error about a missing OSInstall.mpkg. This disrupted my work yesterday, but I thought maybe it’s an issue with my computer. I tried reinstalling the OS from Recovery mode but got stuck on download. I then decided to use the most recent backup which basically saved me. I decided to try again today, given that I thought it might have been something with my inconsistent connection(although I’d have expected Apple to confirm that the package signature matches before attempting to install). However, I just got the exact same error again after attempting to restart the compmacuter.

NB: before restating I checked the AppStore and saw that the iTunes and Commandline tools updated but the Combo update wasn’t maapplied.

All solutions found online didn’t work as I couldn’t locate the OSInstall.mpkg using the find tool in bash.

Please help

The COMBO update is not what you get from the App Store.

Get the actual Combo Update from Apple servers, and try installing that.

(Note: the Combo Update includes everything needed to update any version of High Sierra up to the current version, so it can be used to update 10.13 or 10.13.2 to 10.13.3; the "delta" update is what is offered at the App store and its size depends on the version you currently have)

This is what worked for me, based off of this post: https://medium.com/@aeronode/how-i-fixed-my-non-booting-macos-high-sierra-instal lation-45d238b78c3d

Restart in recovery mode (Cmd-R), Utilities -> Terminal

find / -name OSInstall.mpkg # Will be found somewhere in a tmp directory mkdir -p "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Installation/Packages" cp "<OSInstall.mpkg path>" "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Installation/Packages/" reboot
