incomplete icloud backup

Hello,

back in December i sold my iphone 7plus 128gb,

before that i upgraded icloud account to 50gb storage and clicked Backup Now, watching the progress bar i can say the backup was complete so i removed the simcard, erased iphone and sold.

Now, i tried to get the backup on the new phone i got, but icloud for that phone is 21gb (that should be all the data) but INCOMPLETE.

I tried calling apple support, the operator asked the tech staff to move the partial backup to my icloud drive so i can download and save as much as i can (i'm an IT guy) but the response was negative.

"icloud service can only be used the way it's supposed to be"

iCloud has all/most of the info i need but it won't give it away, that is my info on a virtual space for which i paid for, the errors are from an apple device (iPhone) or an apple service (iCloud), im the end user which won't be helped.

As far as i know, Facebook(and not only) gives you all the data they have on you if it's asked for it, they even made a button that gives you access to download it whenever you want it, because it's your data.

Apple asked me to remove the incomplete backup.

I think my only way is to take legal action, i would really like to see this solved before the 180days which acording to iCloud ToS backups are removed.

thanks, alex.

I agree with Chris. Read the link he provided. It explains exactly what gets backed up.

And just so you know, an iCloud backup cannot be launched from iTunes.

The box in iTunes simply shows where you have Automatic Backups set:

User uploaded file

If you have "This Computer" selected, then whenever the device is connected to the computer, it will back up to iTunes.

If the iCloud option is selected, it means that the device itself is set up to automatically back up to iCloud, and that backup is initiated up to once every 24 hours, whenever the device is plugged into a power source, connected to Wifi, and has the Lock Screen on:

The Automatic iCloud backup setting is under Settings>your name>iCloud>Backups = On:

User uploaded file

What makes you believe the backup is incomplete? You say in your original post that the backup was complete. The data in a backup can only be used to restore to a backup and is not in a file configuration that you are able to separate information. That is why you were told that the data could not be placed in your iCloud drive. An iCloud backup does not backup every bit of data on the phone, and that may be why you feel the backup is incomplete because of the file size. See this support document to explain what iCloud backups contain, About backups for iOS devices - Apple Support. But as indicated earlier, the backup file is not designed to access individual data, but to be used to restore an iOS device.

As far as your inability to restore, then check this support document. If iCloud Backup couldn’t be completed or you can’t restore - Apple Support

You cannot access the data you are referring to in the iCloud backup, so it doesn't matter. Not all the data you refer to is saved in the iCloud backup, depending on how you were handling photos, etc. You are still confusing me when you say that the backup completed on the phone from what you saw and then you sold the phone. If you haven't tried restoring that backup, there is no way for you to know that it was incomplete.

If you go back to the link that I provided you earlier about backups, About backups for iOS devices - Apple Support, it explains what is contained in either an iTunes or iCloud backup. What is backed up depends on your configurations. It also highlights that managing things like contacts only on the iOS device, and not using iCloud, another cloud service, your email account if possible, or a computer program is not a good idea. Anything that exists only on the iOS device is vulnerable to unexpected issues with the iOS device.

I use iCloud to manage my contacts, calendar, notes, and Reminders, so if something happens to my device, they are still available to just be turned back on with a new device, or a restore of the old one. I also backup with iCloud, but my contacts are not in the iCloud backup because they are already managed in iCloud. With iCloud backup, your iOS device will run a daily backup without any work on your part if you turn iCloud backup on. The device will backup when the device is connected to power and the screen is locked. When I do major iOS updates and or change devices, I also run an iTunes backup so I have two of them, in case there is an issue.

I realize at this point, since you no longer have the old device, this is like preaching to the choir, but I still believe you are misunderstanding what is contained in the backups, that is why I provided that link earlier. You don't have individual files in an iCloud backup that you can move around, sift through to just use selected parts, or demand that Apple move to your iCloud drive. I hope you understand this now, and use this as a learning experience.

well, i lost all my photos, documents, contacts, recordings, there is an Incomplete backup unable to restore, i am sure i can save some files out of it, contacts photos, maybe all.

why wont they just move it, i know it's not meant to be used that way, but the iphone/icloud backup was not made to notify incomplete backups to every error.

yes, the progressbar has been filled - i havent double-checked if the icloud backup its complete or not.

all i got for few years on my phone is now lost, and the apple tech won't let me access what i still got there.

file or folder im sure i can recover, i dont want to restore the backup - i only want to try and recover MY FILES

that's frustrating.

OK, so just to clarify: Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, iCloud Drive contents, iCloud Photo Library contents, and iCloud Music Library contents are not included in a backup of your iOS device.

So, you should be able to get your contacts restored simply by signing into iCloud and turning on Contacts. Same with the other items listed above.

As far as photos is concerned, were you using iCloud Photo Library? If not, then the photos in your Camera Roll would be in that backup.

Also, I'm a bit confused about something. Are you indicating that you attempted to set up your new device from the iCloud backup, and you got a message stating there was a problem with the backup?

Gail, thanks for your reply, sync has nothing to do with backup, backup it's an image of your iOS device, including settings call logs, messages, (things seen and unseen by normal user), the sync it's every item you enable under icloud settings in your Settings>iCloud menu.

i need the backup data as it has info only about my phone and i should get it on icloud drive...

Jan 26, 2018 7:12 AM in response to alexteodorescu

I'm afraid you may be confused about what is present in an iCloud backup of your iPhone. That is why I provided you with the information about backups. It is not a full image of your device, there are a number of things that are not part of the backup.

And, despite already being told about how the backup file functions, Apple has told you they cannot put your file in your iCloud drive. There is only one single file, and it is not something that you can extract individual data from.

Jan 26, 2018 10:51 AM in response to alexteodorescu

Yes, I am aware that sync and backup are two different things.

However, your third post stated "well, i lost all my photos, documents, contacts, recordings, there is an Incomplete backup unable to restore, i am sure i can save some files out of it, contacts photos, maybe all."

So, my point was that Contacts are not stored in a backup. Neither are documents (those would be in iCloud Drive - the Files app under iOS 11). And, depending on your configuration, Photos may not be in your backup either if you are using iCloud Photo Library. And not sure what you mean by "recordings"? Voice Memos? Or something else?

Until you can provide the answer to my question concerning how you set up your new device.

So, again, are you indicating that you attempted to set up your new device from the iCloud backup, and you got a message stating there was a problem with the backup? If there was a message, what was it?

Or are your conclusions drawn because you are not seeing everything you expected to see once the restore to backup was done?

And how are you configured? Are you using iCloud Photo Library?

What, exactly happened when you tried to restore, and what, exactly, do you see as missing from your device now.

The contacts, calendars, notes, safari, photos were not synced with the icloud.

ICloud Photos Library was not enabled.

i only used icloud for backup.

as you can see, Dopsy's backup it's 21.6gb, there should be some/all the data that i need.

thanks

OK, so the first sentence above explains why you wouldn't have "lost" all of your Contacts. You wouldn't have gotten them back even if the backup had been a good backup.

If you were able to use the backup, you would be able to get your Camera Roll photos back.

But I'm still not clear on what you mean when you state you "lost" your documents and "recordings". Documents are not backed up in an iOS iCloud backup, so those would not be recoverable via that method. And not sure what you mean by "recordings", so can't advise on that item.

So, another question. When I erase my device and then set it up from an iCloud Backup, I usually have the option to see older backups, and select one of those if I wish. Is there any chance you have previous backups for the 7Plus, or was that the only one you ever did?

hey, so from what you are saying itunes backups are nit the same as icloud backups, right? because im sure you don't loose anything during an itunes backup.

itunes asks you where you want to backup localc pc or icloud, im pretty sure that it would have been in it's menu: local computer (complete) / icloud (partial)

it was the only backup i've done.
