If the previous suggestions do not help, then note that a number of other users have reported that "sucking" on their AirPods has cleared built up wax and resolved volume issues.
Keep in mind that using this method is at your own risk in respect of any damage that you may cause to your AirPods:

Same issue, check settings and correct in accessibility. Even got another AirPod and still the same issue. Seems like it could be a iOS issue. Going to try to wipe my phone and see if the issue happens after that.
That actually worked...unbelievable.
Sucking on it actually worked. I didn't see any wax come out but it worked. now the volume is back on full. Thanks for this bit of info!
So I did both, suck on the main speaker grill and used a little 70% ethanol to clean out the dirt (ear wax). I was care full of wiping the ethanol quickly with a dry q-tip (which I also used to apply the ethanol). I held the AirPod downwards to prevent alcohol from going inside. I also lightly blew into the AirPod and then alternated back and forth. There seemed to be some blockage as the more I did it the more air filtered through to indicate there was obstruction due to dirt. Amazingly the AirPods are back to their original loudness. My right one was the worst but now just as loud as the left and both are louder.
Take heed of the post on "at your own risk". You might actually damage the internals by the sucking method and using 70% ethanol. My AirPods were well beyond warranty and my initial support call with Apple was not very useful as they said I was not under coverage anymore and I should replace the earpiece at $80/each. Could buy a new pair for that price.
If your AirPods are under warranty I would take to apple store first. If not, the sucking method seems to work but may not work for everyone.
FYI, I used to wear my AirPods while running. I'm sure the sweat and ear wax built up over time and clogged up the earpieces. I've read some more online and seems that the AirPods may not be suited for full workouts where you sweat more than usual. Other than that they are great. Now that I have full loudness I'm happy. I might go back to wearing them for running now that I have an unofficial method of cleaning. Hoping the new AirPods with improved sweat proofing and with wireless charging are announced soon.
I have not experienced problems. You can check to see if your device is set with the volume centered between the two by going to Settings>General>Accessibility, then scroll down to the Hearing Section and see that the volume balance is centered between the left and right channels.
This worked for me. I didn't suck on it but, I cleaned the speaker that goes directly into the ear with 70% ethanol and a kim wipe. Essentially, you can just use an alcohol based cleaner and a Q-tip. It worked perfectly.
Hi
It may help to check your settings:
Go to: Settings > General > Accessibility > under "Hearing", check and, if required, adjust the audio volume balance slider between the left and right channels.
It may otherwise help to clean your AirPod.
Apple's instructions for cleaning your AirPods are detailed here (under the heading "Clean your AirPods with charging case:):
Learn more about your AirPods with charging case - Apple Support
To clean the meshes, Apple advises using a clean, small, dry, soft-bristled brush to carefully and gently brush them:

i have this issue i just bought my airpods 2 months ago and the right Airpod has 10% of the oroginal volume. you might need to go to Apple store to replace it. some stores offer one year extra after apple’s warranty is expired.
I did this and it worked then it lost sound worse the next morning. It was like that for months. Then I tried it again but when I finished that I held down on the small side port on the AirPods and blew air in. It went right back to like new.
I used that method and it worked the first time but the right airpod lost sound again after a couple of weeks, so i used the method again but nothing happened. Is there anything else I could do to fix it?
Ok , i had that issue and I disconnected the airpod and connected back - the volume became “normal”
It worked! I don’t believe it.
Can I do the same on my Mac? Issue fixed for iPhone but not for MacBook.
And on iPhone the volume of music is lower on Right so the problem not fixed, just "cludge" 😟
Sorry I meant to say 70% isopropyl (rubbing alcohol) not ethanol. Surely you would not want to use that stuff.
