GPS Tracking Options for Macbooks in the event of theft

I travel 80% of the time for work. A few weeks ago, I had a window busted out of my rental car, and my backpack stolen, which contained my macbook pro and lots of valuable data on different drives. Find my Mac still has not pinged the location of the mac, which is no surprise because it will only ping if the laptop comes online to a known network or internet with no password. This feature helped me none. I worked at apple support in the past and I can speak for others by saying the Find My Iphone/Mac app does not usually yield any helpful data when a device is stolen. It is typically only helpful if you lose a device within range of a known network aka around you or a friend's house.... Once again, not very helpful.

That being said, there are many apps that will track a stolen device when it comes online or when it comes in range of bluetooth, but I am of the opinion that these options are very limited just like the Find My iPhone app. I believe the only solution that will be sufficient for finding a device after it is stolen is to have GPS tracking on it that communicates with some form of cellular service.

The only thing that even looks helpful is not even intended for devices, it is GPS tracking for your animal. (Link below) The battery has to be recharged often, and it is a bulky piece that I would have to keep in the bag that my laptop is in, because it would be hard to attach the laptop. Either way, I feel that having this in my backpack would give me a much better chance of finding my stolen laptop than other solutions.

Surely, there is something else out there that is a solution for me that is a better option than the above? We have GPS tracking on all kinds of items, yet I can't find what I'm looking for.

You asked about GPS tracking options so I responded that there are none. Unless the computer is connected to the Internet there is no way to know where it is.

Your best options include:

1. Report the theft to the local police then if they happen to run across it they will call you. They won't do a dedicated search for it.

2. Make sure your home insurance coverage covers loss of a computer while it is away from home.

3. Maintain current and complete remote backups of your data to ensure you don't lose data if your computer is stolen.

I also provided a link to Apple's unsolicited ideas submission policy because your initial post seemed to me to be addressing Apple regarding your idea of including some kind of GPS in their product design.

I know this.... I never said they do. I am not asking to activate some non-existent feature inside the machine. I am looking for any solution from any company that can help me keep track of my 2000 dollar investment. That is not something so absurd. I am looking for out of the box ideas from helpful people that have knowledge of a solution.

You guys aren't thinking outside the box. Below is a link to something that is a better solution than Find My Mac because it DOES NOT require the mac to be on and online. Find My Mac is essentially useless for helping with theft, and any other software I have found has the same limitations. I am not looking to recover my lost mac. I want to be able to recover my new mac if this ever happens again. I just find it hard to believe we have so many GPS tracking technologies available, but it seems I cannot find any small inconspicuous chips to attach to a valuable item like a macbook. Below is what I'm looking for, but it is so large that it cant be reasonably attached to a laptop. I suppose I thought there would be other people that feel Find My Mac is useless and opted to look into other solutions.

THANK YOU BOB! I hope you catch a large fish in the near future. I have been doing google searches that are similar to yours, but it seems the "one chip" phrase got me what I was looking for. I appreciate your help very much. When i brought up this subject at the apple store, the worker took me to a imac, googles the internet for "mac security", and then says "here it is! Malwarebytes!" I thanked him and left. lololol
