Message of virus in MacBook Air

I have a a MacBook Air. I clicked on a website and got a message from apple.com-protect-systems. live: “your Mac is infected with 3 viruses! “ I panicked and clicked on the Scan Now button but then I had second thoughts when it asked me to download an app. How can I make sure I am not infected ?
