Can't send, but can receive, iCloud email from Macbook Pro

I just upgraded my MacBook Pro (mid 2009) to El Capitan 10.11.6 and cannot send Apple email. I can receive mail on all accounts. Manually added SMTP.mail.me.com to SMTP server list for email account with iCloud name and password. When I try to send email, it asks for password, then rejects it. Email receive and send works from all IOS devices.

Can you send e-mails from other accounts? Have you tried deleting the account and then adding it back?
