Recent Items in Dock - Drag & Drop?

Hi

Finder has a 'Recents' folder, which is very useful. I like to keep it in the dock for quick access. What's confusing me is: I can see/open recent files from the folder in the dock, but cannot drag & drop out of the recent folder like I can with the downloads folder (or any other folder that gets added to the dock and displayed as a grid). It just seems to be the recents folder that doesn't work the same as others...

Wondering if anyone has found a workaround, as I often need to drag & email files I just worked on.
