Unable to update from 10.13.2 to 10.13.3 on MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012)

My computer will not update from 10.13.2 (17C205) to the just released 10.13.3

Initially App Store picked up the update.

After downloading and restarting, the installation process seem to complete but ends with an error message

When I click the install option, it goes through the whole process of downloading the update, restarting and installing that never completes.

Now my computer won't even see the update as available in the App Store.

I have tried downloading the install package for 10.13.3 but it still goes through the same process.

I had the same issue after imaging the HDD to an SSD upgrade using SuperDuper. Fortunately, I kept the original drive as an external backup drive in an enclosure. The 2012 MacBook Pro booted off the original drive without issue and updated to 10.13.4 easily (the entire process took maybe 90 minutes). Once the HDD updated, I backed up to the SSD again using SuperDuper and everything worked. Select "backup all files" using the copy different files option and it takes much less time than creating a completely new image. The SSD now updates without a problem and boots more quickly than before. Hope this helps.

I had recently upgraded my hard drive to SSD, using carbon copy cloner. Would that have any contribution to the problem?

Yes. Some SSDs work, some don't.

But the new internal SSD will not update.

Apparently yours is in the latter category. The reasons are not clear, but all available evidence suggests incompatible firmware. That particular problem typically becomes apparent when attempting to upgrade macOS due to the firmware updates that accompany it. Apple does not test that firmware on anything other than the devices they incorporate in the products they build, and the Samsung "EVO" series appear to be particularly notorious for causing trouble.

Potential workarounds include the solution you described, reinstalling macOS from Recovery mode, and other conniptions that may be required again upon future macOS upgrades or updates.
