iTunes - Library cannot be saved error message

I am trying to delete songs from my iTunes library on my PC. Each time I delete songs I get an error message telling me the library cannot be saved, error 13010. The songs that I have deleted then reappear in the library the next time I start iTunes.

At the moment I cannot sync my iTunes to my iPod as the library is too big. But iTunes will not let me delete any material.

I have the latest version of iTunes (it was updated yesterday), and am running it on a Windows 10 PC.

null-OTHER, Windows 10

See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows. Make sure that the permissions on your iTunes folder are set correctly. If you have any non-Microsoft anti-virus software then try to exclude it from real time scanning of the iTunes folder. It may also help to right-click the iTunes shortcut and run iTunes as the administrator. Sometimes doing this once can fix issues with the way that iTunes stores preferences.

Hello LolVB,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

I understand from your post that you are getting an error message with error code 13010 when trying to delete music from your iTunes library so you can sync music to your iPod. The following article has steps which address this error and my help resolve this issue:

If you see error -5000, -69, 13010, or 13014 when you sync music in iTunes - Apple Support

Best Regards.

Hi LolVB,

The following article has steps to sync your content manually without having to delete any content from your iTunes library:

iTunes for Windows: Sync iPod, iPhone, or iPad

Add items to your device manually

You can manually add music, movies, TV shows, and podcasts to your device. You can’t manually add photos, contacts, or other info.

  1. Make sure your device is connected.

  2. In your iTunes library, right-click an item, choose Add to Device, then choose your device.

Let us know how it goes.

Regards.

Hi tt2

I think you may have hit upon something. I took a look and while all the permissions are otherwise correct, there seems to be a random file in there - WMPNetworkSvc that is read-only.

Unfortunately, all options relating to this file are greyed out, so I can see it, I just can't do anything about it.

Not sure if this is now an Apple problem or a Microsoft one as I am fairly certain WMPNetworkSvc is a Windows Media Player file. Will talk to both supports and see where I get.

Thanks

Hi Allen A

I have already seen that article, and have already taken all these steps but unfortunately it does not solve my problem.

The primary issue is not that I can't sync to my iPod. The main issue is that I am unable to make any changes to my iTunes library. Or rather I can make the changes, but I then get an error message that the library cannot be saved, so any deletions/additions/corrections to song information I make disappear and the library reverts to the version before I made the changes.

The only sync issue I'm having is the library is too big to sync to the iPod. And the only reason the library is too big is that I cannot make any changes to the library as iTunes will not let me save the latest smaller version of the library.

As far as I know, once the library is reduced in size, the sync will work fine.

Kind regards

Hi tt2

So, have found a way that I can change the permissions, but when I try to I get an error message saying that the task cannot be completed because the hyberfil.sys file is in use. Apparently this is something to do with sleep mode in Windows and is known to be causing problems at the moment.

I am beginning to think this is more of a Windows 10 issue rather than a specific iTunes issue because I am now having a permissions problem with my scanner - apparently I don't have "permission" to save scanned files to any of the folders on my PC!

Will have a conversation with Microsoft Support and see if sorting the scanner and the hyberfil.sys/WMPNetwork Svc issue fixes the iTunes problem at the same time.

I'll come back to you with the results.

Kind regards

Hi Brenden dv

Thank you for this - that is useful to know. But the point is I WANT to delete and generally tidy up and rationalise my iTunes library. There are duplicate songs, missing info, some songs are in the wrong genre, I want to revise the playlists etc, and the whole library is now so big and so unwieldy (there are about 40,000 songs in it) that I can't find anything I'm looking for half the time.

Again, the issue is not syncing. The issue is I cannot make the changes I want to make my song library more user-friendly as any changes I make are not saved and so all the work I do to sort out the library just disappears.

If I can't find a solution to this I am seriously considering dumping iTunes and moving to another system to store and play my music library.

Kind regards

LolVB
