When you erase an iPad from find my phone does it erase and restore to original software or just erase?

I returned a refurbished iPad 2 to an outfit I purchased it from bucause it wouldn’t boot up. They have asked for the passcode (apparently they got it to boot) which I provided. Now they want the password for my Appleid. So I have two questions: one, can’t they restore to out of the box condition without having to log on my appleid?, and second, if I use findmyphone to erase when it connects to the internet, will that restore to out of box condition or just erase everything? Thanks, Doug

iPad 2, iOS 6.1.3

I've done it before. It erases everything such that the data can't be retrieved. However, I needed to enter my Apple ID and password in order to unlock it. At that point it can be restored to factory settings or restored from a compatible iOS backup. It might even be possible to restore from an iPhone backup.

Well - I don't recall if "factory settings" meant exactly like the factory or with the latest version of iOS.

I feel uncomfortable giving out my password. Can’t they erase and restore it just by hooking it up to pc and forcing a restore without needing my password. And failing that my question is if I erase it from “findmyphone” as I understand it, it should erase my iPad as soon as it connects to the internet. Will that end up restoring it to the same status as new out of the box?

You don't have to give them your password. Login to iCloud.com, or use Find-My-iPhone, to erase the iPad, then remove it from your account.

Did you purchase it from someone fairly local? I think it's a pretty fair trade if they returned your money that you might go in person to unlock it. If it was mail order I might agree if they would send it to you with a return label so that you could unlock it and return it.
