Too many userids

Is it possible to merge several different userids into just one? I have used different email addresses with my laptop, phone and other products over many years. I'd like to reduce the number of userids. I have heard that purchases I've made on iTunes with the various userids cannot be combined under one. Is that true? Thanks in advance for any help or advice.
