You don't buy the battery but pay for the complete service. Apple or an authorized service provider will only replace the battery in exchange for your current battery.

I'd make an appointment at an Apple Store. where they'll run a diagnostic and then place you on a list. This is the way I recommend doing it:

  • Start here: https://support.apple.com/iphone/repair
  • Click on "Start your repair request" (blue button at the bottom).
  • Click on "Battery, Power & Charging".
  • Click on "Battery Replacement".
  • Then click on "Bring in for Repair". You have to select a carrier, but it doesn't really matter.

You then can select any number of different Apple Stores or AASPs. I recommend an Apple Store because you know what the price will be (currently $29). Each AASP may charge its own labor rate, although quite a few are matching Apple's flat $29 rate.

You may not be able to get an appointment that quickly, but give it a try.

I checked and at least a few hours ago they had plenty of appointment times for May 6. It was really odd too since the next closest Apple Store had no appointments available for the entire online appointment window.

The information you seek is on the warranty legal page. The opening by any 3rd party, or installation of non-Apple parts will void the warranty and Apple will no longer support the device.

I get that it's the reality that Apple may refuse to service an iPhone with an aftermarket battery, and I believe in warning people against getting an aftermarket battery to maintain future access to Apple service. But there's very little that Apple does to warn customers about it.

It's not on the warranty page that simply having an aftermarket battery will result in loss of repair service. The US warranty info has pretty standard disclaimers. It contains a lot of "damaged caused by" disclaimers that are compliant with warranty laws.

Apple One (1) Year Limited Warranty

This Warranty does not apply:

(c) to damage caused by use with a third party component or product that does not meet the Apple Product’s specifications (Apple Product specifications are available at www.apple.com under the technical specifications for each product and also available in stores);

(e) to damage caused by operating the Apple Product outside Apple’s published guidelines;

(f) to damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (“AASP”);

It's not in the repair terms for Apple retail stores in the US:

Apple Inc. Repair Terms & Conditions

Outside of US Apple Stores they only have the disclosure requirement:

Legal - Repair Terms and Conditions - Apple

1.11.6 Disclosure of Unauthorized Modifications. During the service ordering process, you must notify Apple of any unauthorized modifications, or any repairs or replacements not performed by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (“AASP”), that have been made to your product. Apple will not be responsible for any damage to the product that occurs during the repair process that is a result of any unauthorized modifications or repairs or replacements not performed by Apple or an AASP. If damage results, Apple will seek your authorization for any additional costs for completing service even if the product is covered by warranty or an AppleCare service plan. If you decline authorization, Apple may return your product unrepaired in the damaged condition without any responsibility.

The US AppleCare+ terms are the only place I've seen it mentioned officially by Apple:

Legal - AppleCare+ - Apple

3. What is not Covered?

3.1 Hardware Services and ADH Services

Apple will not provide Hardware Services or ADH [accidentally damaged hardware] Services in the following circumstances:

(g) to repair any damage to Covered Equipment (regardless of the cause) if the Covered Equipment has been opened, serviced, modified, or altered by anyone other than Apple or an authorized representative of Apple;

Where are you located?

If you live in an area with an Apple Store, making an appointment is the preferred method. Some countries have what Apple calls Apple Authorized Service Providers.

There is also the aftermarket option, but proceed carefully if you choose that method.

Follow the instructions I had earlier. I checked and they have appointments for May 6. Alternatively you can go there and ask to make an appointment in person if you can't access it. You'll need an Apple ID (preferably your granddaughter's) in order to make an online appointment, but one need it if you make an appointment in person.

I would have recommended 4th Street because you can find free parking, but they're booked solid for iPhone appointments for the week.

My iPhone 6 battery crapped out while I was on vacation and not near any Apple outlets, so I had a third party store install their replacement battery so my phone would work. I just came from my local Apple store where I was denied replacement due to the non-Apple battery in the phone.

I looked over the $29 replacement page and no where does it state I am ineligible for replacement. The genius said they wouldn't even replace it at full price.

It's disappointing to find out Apple won't help in any way.

Did you figure out how to get a new battery? I don’t live within a 3 hour drive of an apple store. Went one once and there was a 2 hour wait for service. Maybe the Key to get service is switch from an apple phone to someone else.

In that case Apple does allow "Apple Authorized Service Providers" to perform battery replacements. The only issue is that they are generally free to set their own service prices, although many are matching Apple's current $29 (US) price.

There's also mail-in service.

Leaving it on the charger all night is not the problem. I have left every iOS device I have owned over the past 10 years on the charger overnight, every night. In fact, it is a best practice. It was never a problem, and it shouldn't be, because charging is managed in the device, and it shuts down when the phone reaches full charge. What might be a problem is if either the Lightning cable or the USB power source were not Apple made or Apple Made for iPhone certified. Either can damage the charging circuit in the phone. If this is not the problem (even if it is) have Apple check it out, as already suggested.
