Preview does not open jpg, jpeg files on my iMac. The images flashes for a second then turns blue.
I have tried to reset preview as the default viewer, but it made no difference. I do not have this issue on my MacBook Pro, images open with no problem.

I'm also trying to open jpg files with Preview on my iMac running OS 10.6.8. I can do this with no problem on my other computers running OS 10.6.8 and I can boot up my iMac on an external drive running OS 10.6.8 and I am able to double click on a jpg file and Preview (the default) opens up the file. Currently I have to open Preview first, then Preview>Open and I can open the files. Tried Safe mode, did not work but (aside) in Safe mode Corel Painter Essentials 3 worked (it does not work out of safe mode). I also tried creating a new account with no luck. This problem started about one month ago.
If it is a pdf file Adobe acrobat opens it, if it is a jpg or tiff file nothing happens, if I choose "Open With" the default is preview, but nothing happens. If I boot up on an external drive running 10.6.8 preview works fine on the exact same file.
You may want to reset the launch services database and see if it helps.
Copy and paste the following - it a very long single line - to a terminal window and press enter.
[Note: this forum software tends to add spaces where none existed, so make sure that there are none up to and including the word "lsregister", then there are spaces before each dash "-" and the final letter "u"]

If it does not fix it, please run Etrecheck, a diagnostic utility, and post its report here.
I uninstalled AVAST and I restarted the computer, did not help. I ran Mountain Lion Cache cleaner, it worked. I re-installed AVAST, it stopped working. Without uninstalling AVAST I ran Mountain Lion Cache cleaner again and it works.π
Just to let you know that you are not alone.
I also have the same problem on my Mac Book Pro.
Go figure! It's working again, along with AVAST! Computers really simplify life! π
Which iMac running what version of macOS?
Try these two tests and let us know the results:
1) make a new user account and see if Preview opens jpeg files there
2) restart in Safe Mode and see if in Safe Mode Preview opens the files in your acc
Select one such file in the Finder, press Command-I, and in the Get Info window, for Open With:, choose Preview; then click the "Change All" button.

Nope, does not fix the issue.
What exactly happens when you double-click one of these files in the Finder?
If you control-click and choose Open With..., what is the default?
Uninstall avast and try again.
That was short lived, AVAST seems to be the culprit.
