Make Apple TV Stream SD all the time.

Is there any way to force the Apple TV to stream all video in standard definition? With Comcast’s data caps, streaming in HD means I’ve no internet left for download PS4 games or for operating system updates for my laptop, iPad, iPhone, or my wife’s devices. We have a 4K TV that almost never gets 4K content because it takes way to big a bite out of monthly allotment. Hence, we mainly stick to 4K Blu Rays. So, due to data caps, I want to go back to standard definition streaming so I don’t have to choose between games, TV, or security updates every month :/

Yeah, I don’t buy/rent digital movies, because the quality REALLY REALLY REALLY ***** compared to Blu-ray. So, changing my iTunes settings doesn’t really help.

Apple TV apps have almost no settings to adjust, so doing it by 3rd party apps isn’t going to work either.

I guess, even though I’ve got paid, legal access to content, I’ll have to pirate the shows to get the format I need, namely Standard Def :(

iTunes content is much higher quality than others, the 4K stuff does approach blu ray quality.

Again, for 3rd party content you wouldn’t be using settings on ATV but rather adjusting elsewhere, I.e. going to the Netflix website and changing playback settings, which would apply to all devices using the service.

I wouldn’t be posting about pirating on a public forum

After going through all the video apps, it would appear Netflix is the only one that allows you to change the video playback quality.

HBOGo doesn’t

Amazon Prime Video doesn’t

CBS All-Access doesn’t

CW doesn’t

Hulu - I don’t have the service, so IDK

On 4K Streaming; from my experience, a Dolby Vision 4K UHD movie, streamed, has about the same picture quality a regular HDTV Blu-Ray.

However, the Apple TV itself doesn’t support Dolby Atmos or DTSX, so iTunes Movies don’t either. If you’re heard movies with these sound formats, you know there’s just no comparison to Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD. Moreover, there’s no 3D versions on steaming. I still love 3D and ALWAYS opt for 3D over 4K. 4K seems more like a gimmick really, as you have to squint hard and really pay attention to notice the difference between it and regular HDTV.

I mean, I’m willing to bet that the reason HDTV’s aren’t getting HDR, is because people would realize there’s no reason for 4K.

Therefore, quality coupled with data caps, means I’ll be buying physical media for the foreseeable future. Even if I have to buy for foreign counties. I mean, I already had to buy a British region B Blu-ray player to watch the remastered Terminator 2: Judgment Day 3D Blu Ray that came out December 5th 2017. Only the 4K version came to the States.

Other than Amazon, which I don’t use, I don’t have access to those as I am in Canada. However, that is often the price you pay with streaming and SD often doesn’t look good especially if you’re switching from the HD version.

Yes, I was referring to regular blu rays when comparing to the 4K stream and I do agree in terms of the audio.

In reality 3D for home use was considered a gimmick and most manufacturers have dropped it on their TV’s. Even cinemas are starting to drop it from their IMAX screenings.

4K is different. The resolution alone may not be worth it unless you are really close or have a huge screen, however combined with the wider colour gamut and HDR it is noticeably superior. HDR wouldn’t look as good on a 1080 panel, heck even current tv’s can’t truly take advantage of Dolby vision as it is designed for 12 bit.

If you take a look at a really good 4K disc, like Planet Earth 2, and compare it to the standard BD, there is a noticeable uptick in quality
