Iphone 8 Camera shooting low-res

From the documentation I have my iPhone 8 should be shooting still pictures at 12 megapixels by default. So I should be taking pictures that are 4032 x 3024 pixels. However, my camera is taking pictures that are only 768 × 1,024. I can't find anything in settings that will adjust the resolution. Please help.

See

Compress photos to save space. (iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus) To save space, iPhone captures photos and videos in new high-efficiency formats called HEIF and HEVC automatically. To change image and video format settings, go to Settings > Camera > Formats, then choose either High Efficiency (saves more space) or Most Compatible.

I realize now that it was the way I was sending the file (sms) to my laptop that shrunk the photo. So, I was in fact taking photos at 4032 x 3024 pixels, all along. But my question remains. Is there any way to actually change resolution? Your suggestion has no effect on resolution. I suspect what you suggest does some kind of lossy compression to the file, but it doesn't change the pixels. I can live with this if I'm shooting full size pictures, but it would still be useful to be able to adjust the pixels. Is that possible.
