Slow internet through ethernet, extremely slow suddenly through wifi

I have an old Macbook Pro. And I've successfully upgraded it thanks to free advice from these forums (after paying "experts" to help to no avail.

So it has a solid state drive in it, replaced battery, and also the local Mac laptop shop soldered the wifi card about 6 months ago... after wifi stopped working. I know the whole laptop is overdue for replacement but I am a penniless English teacher living in Prague. HELPPPPP!

The issue now is 2-fold:

1. Internet speed through the ethernet – 30% slower than the a test done in parallel on my iphone 5.

2. Wifi internet speed today has dropped to 10% of the speed through the iphone 5.

I understand that the wifi card maybe knackered in. That's one thing. But why is the ethernet connection also rather compromised?

Any clever person out there who can help solve this?

Hello, flightoffancy.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

It's my understanding that your ethernet connection is slower than it should be. I do have some suggestions that may help with this. Try some of these steps in this article: macOS Sierra: Troubleshoot using an Ethernet device

If you have an Ethernet device (such as a DSL or cable modem, or an Ethernet hub or router) connected to your computer, and it doesn’t seem to be working properly, here are a few things to try.

  • Make sure the Ethernet cable is securely connected to the Ethernet port on your computer and the device. Remove the cable, then reconnect it to make sure it’s connected properly.

  • Check the Ethernet cable to make sure it’s not damaged.

  • Make sure your network settings are correct. If you’re not sure which settings to use, contact your ISP.

  • Shut down your computer, then turn off the Ethernet device. Wait a few minutes, then turn the Ethernet device back on. Wait until it has started up completely, then restart your computer.

Another great test to see if it's your MacBook Pro, if possible try connecting to another network.

You can also test to see if the speeds are slow in a test user account and safe mode:

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

This can help narrow things down. Let me know if this helps.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

Cheers!
