VIP mailbox slow, not showing certain senders in all mailboxes list

Hoping there is help for this issue(s). My VIP box is sporadically very slow about loading emails from VIPs to my All Inboxes, even short text messages. It is always very slow if I look in VIPs. Most of these emails are coming in through a Gmail account that I use for my business. The slow part is annoying, but now there seems to be an even worse issue.
A client (VIP) emailed me several times this week, and I never saw the messages. The only way I knew she had sent an email was that, luckily, I glanced at my phone and saw an alert with her name on it. I then opened email on my desktop to scroll through and find the message, but it was no where to be seen, not in the gmail, all inboxes or VIP lists. Finally did a search--maybe I was hallucinating when I saw the alert and might need a Dr. LOL--and the two messages showed up in the search results list and were able to be read. They still have a star next to them indicating she is a VIP, too.
Tech notes:
Desktop system: 10.13.2
Mac Email: 11.2
-The email is coming in through my Gmail account and the only one missing so far (I hope)
-Other VIPs coming in through the same Gmail account have been sporadically somewhat slow to load. Regular (unVIPed) emails coming in through the same account do not have this problem
-Went online to check my Gmail (I rarely go there) and the "missing" messages are there
-To this day, the messages cannot be seen in any of my devices or desktop Mac Mail, only if I do a search.
-Today, a re: message from the same sender (she was replying to an apology I emailed about missing her emails) made it into the appropriate inboxes--except for VIP!!
Would rebuilding my VIP box help? I hesitate to do it for fear of losing even more important messages...Thanks!
