Apple Watch glass broken around the sides

The glass of my watch 2 broke in a very curious way, as a crack around the sides, no the actual watch face. I thought this is very strange. You'd expect to crack accidentally on top, on the face but not a long crack around the sides. This seems to be tension in the glass as part of manufacturing rather than impact on glass.

Hi

Apple does not offer a screen repair or screen replacement service for Apple Watch and Apple Watch is not user-serviceable. Your watch will instead need to be replaced.

Apple's Limited Warranty covers issues due to defects in materials and workmanship, but not due to accidental damage. Arrange service (see below) to establish whether your issue is covered under warranty or other Apple policy.

If you have previously purchased AppleCare+, then the issue may otherwise be covered as one of up to two claims for accidental damage, each subject to a service fee / excess. Otherwise, your Apple Watch may be eligible for replacement via chargeable, out-of-warranty service.

Contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider to arrange for your Apple Watch to be inspected and to establish your available service options:

I'm afraid that no-one here can tell you what Apple will decide in your specific case. You are not talking to Apple here - this is a user-based technical support community.

In the meantime, note that Apple advises that you should not continue using a damaged Apple Watch.

My Apple Watch series 3 (purchased after Christmas 2017) developed the same problem within 60 days of purchase. I wasn't sure it was physically damaged because it was so straight and around the edge, and I did not recall any undue drop or hit.

I finally took it in a few days later because it felt like it was extending. Again, no visible shatter to the naked eye. Just thought I'd check.

At the Apple store, close up or microscope showed one area of missing glass, so it was judged physical damage. (Who knows, maybe manufacturing or material defect predisposed to damage by a usually inconsequential impact?) I sent it in for diagnosis, but because I took it in only after 60 days and I hadn't purchased AppleCare I will have to pay $289 for repair/replacement.

So, everyone, check your new watches and feel for invisible cracks around the watch face. If enough people report it, perhaps it IS a manufacturing defect and we can get replacements for less than $289.
