unable to unblock developer in security & privacy preferences pane

In my security and privacy preferences, I have a "The developer 'Google, Inc.' is currently blocked". When I unlock preferences, and then click on "Accept" nothing happens.

In console, I see this particular event strongly correlated to the mouse click for that button:

com.apple.preference.security.remoteservice Dropping mouse down event because sender's PID (112) isn't 0 or self (423)

At present, this is blocking Google's Drive File Stream.app for working correctly.

How do I get macOS to accept this developer? FWIW, I have Chrome.app running without issue.

Note: using macOS 10.13.3

iMac, macOS High Sierra (10.13.3)

Appreciate the viewpoint, John. Do not find it particularly germane to this thread.

FWIW, CountryGirl56, a point fix on semantic versioning, by its very definition means that 10.13.0 to 10.13.3 is non-breaking if done correctly.

Regardless, the issue and fix is with using an Apple mouse. At present, it appears that some, if not all, third-party mice such as those produced from Logitech are not considered "secure", and thus a mouse-click for this particular button is rejected.

To wit, it requires use of an Apple product such aa Magic Mouse to successfully click on the "Approve" button in order to register Google's kext for its streaming filesystem.

P.S. Wish there was a way to have a way to note what comments are "not useful," such as is the case for both CountryGirl56 and John Galt.

Thanks for posting this. I discovered tonight that using Screen Sharing has the same issue (no third-party mouse involved — MacBook Air trackpad to a Mac Mini). I’m guessing that the Logitech mouse has a user process interfacing with it for extra functionality, rather than using the standard USB HID driver.

This feature makes a lot of sense from a security standpoint — preventing programmatic “fake clicks” on the button — but does not appear to be documented anywhere, and it’s particularly annoying that there is no feedback.

Note, per Use work or school files on your computer with Drive File Stream - Google Drive Help

Google calls out that for macOS 10.13.3 to do the following:

To use Drive File Stream on macOS 10.13 (High Sierra):

  1. Open Drive File Stream.
  2. At the top left, go to User uploaded fileUser uploaded fileSystem Preferences User uploaded file Security & Privacy.
  3. Next to "System software from developer "Google, Inc." was blocked from loading," click Allow.

It is step 3 that is broken on macOS at present.

While we are divurging from solving the problem I had at hand, I think if Apple requires certified secure hardware for certain operations I also think it is on Apple to notify the user (me) that the mouse click I just issued is not "secure" and to use an Apple certified secure device ... minimally as a courtesy to me, the user.

As you note, Apple has had a year or more working on High Sierra. If they want to put security in the hands of users, then they should ensure we have all the information we need to do so.

Instead, it required a person with 40 years working experience with Apple go spelunking through console logs and two-days of deep diving into Apple dev forums and elsewhere to finally make the mental leap that my Logitech mouse is somehow the culprit.

That said, you are correct with Logitech's slowness, at times, to update for Apple. That does not absolve Apple of better UX for this edge-case. Nor did any of this philosophical debate actually help me, the user -- which to be quite direct and frank, I found and still find off-putting and not helpful in the slightest.
