How do I disable the wireless network and instead connect it to the network using wired ethernet? Reason is I want to use airplay and connect it via the audio cable to a Sonos system

This was possible in version 1 of the Airport Express. See video on how to connect sonos to airplay. But there seems to be no option to turn off the wireless on the second gen airport express. If I leave the network on and its extending the existing wireless network it disconnects the ipad from the main wireless network so I have only the option to turn off the Airport express to get back onto the wireless network with my ipad or iPhone.

The option to turn "off" the wireless for the 2nd Gen AirPort Express is pretty clear in the iOS version of AirPort Utility.

AirPort Utility on the App Store - iTunes - Apple

In the example below, you can see that the AirPort Express is currently configured to "Extend a wireless network". To turn the WiFi off, you would tap on Off, then update to save the new settings.

Or, perhaps you are saying that you are using a Mac and do not know how to turn off the WiFi?

Open AirPort Utility on your Mac (Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility)

Click on the picture of the AirPort Express, then click Edit

Click the Wireless tab

Change the setting for Network Mode to Off

Click Update in the lower right corner of the window to save the new setting
