So I just recently bought a 2016 MacBook Pro 15" and I noticed that when the screen is in the closed position the screen curves up just slightly on the left and right. I closes perfectly tight in the middle, but the sides are left open for dust to get in. Is this a common issue for this model or is this a defect?

I have a similar model, and your issue appears to be a defect. As Kappy noted earlier, make an appointment with the Apple Genius Bar or find an authorized repair store near you to fix the issue.

Ok I talked to apple and am going to send it in. I do have a Debrand skin on the lid, how does that work if they replace the screen?
The skin will be removed. Most likely it won't be returned. Take it off before you send it in.
