Running High Sierra on 2018 MacBook Pro:

  1. My 2TB external Time Machine drive is full and old back-ups are not automatically being deleted to make room for new backups. This automatic deletion function worked fine on my old MacBook Pro. How can I fix this? Or, is there a way to manually delete the old back-ups?
  2. After purchasing a new MacBook Pro, I now have two separate folders in the Time Machine Drive. Example, “My Hard Drive” …, and “My Hard Drive (2)” How can I transfer all the back-ups to the “My Hard Drive (2)”

Hello radiowatch,

The easiest and safest approach would be to buy a new Time Machine drive. If you are backing up two machines, 2 TB is a bit small.

Due to the enormous number of files and folders on a Time Machine drive, any kind of maintenance is very difficult. The only thing you can really do in less than a week is erase the entire drive and start over. That will work, but you will also lose your existing backups.

If you buy a new backup drive, you can make new backups on the new drive. Then, once you have a new set of backups for both machines, you can erase the old drive. At that point, you have two backup drives and you can rotate between them for twice the data security.
