Unable to view apps in itunes

I just got a macbook air. I have never had one before, so I am still learning. But, I have my iphone connected via cord. I am unable to view my apps in itunes in the drop down menu, or in my purchase history. Apps are not even listed on my iphone to select from. What am I doing wrong?

Since the iTunes 12.7 release, Apps are no longer manually managed in iTunes. See: Changes in the new iTunes - Apple Support

As noted there, if you have apps that were previously synced via iTunes when it still did that, you can manually move them to an iPhone if needed.
