I need to free up some space on my old Imac with version 10.01 Imovie on it which takes up 25gb of space but only has 1. 5gb of movies in it. I'd rather not delete it completely. Any suggestions?

Deleting render files is a good way to save space as they are large. Open iMovie preferences and at the bottom where it says render files click on delete. This will delete render files in all open libraries.

Yes, I think you are correct. I know that the options in preferences has changed with iterations of iMovie 10 but don't recall which version added the render files deletion choice. It is possible to open the library bundle and manually delete the render files but it is risky as you can corrupt the library if you are not careful. I wouldn't recommend it if you are not comfortable with doing it. If you do want to try it post back and I'll give you the instructions. Deleting render files does not affect the projects you have in the library. Given your versions of iMovie placing your library on an external drive is probably your best choice. As Rich pointed out you open the library with the version of iMovie that created it or a later version not an earlier one.

My suggestion is to get an external drive formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled) and move your iMovie library to it. External drives are so inexpensive.

You need to open the transferred library with the iMovie version 10.1 that is on your old iMac.
1.5 GB of movies is not very much for a whole library. How did you come up with that figure?

Thanks for your response. I am using an older version 10.0.5 of Imovie so maybe the preferences are different. It only had 2 options CLIPS (apply slow motion) and THEATER (upload to Icloud) which seemed weird. Nothing about rendering. If I do find that, does deleting them mean the original movies are gone?
I did this and it all transferred, but it won't open. Just says can't open. Could it be because it is an older version and my Macbook pro has a newer version? I still would prefer to just keep the original on my old IMAC and just delete whatever is making it take up 25gb..
