Does AppleCare Plus cover water damage to the IPhone 8+ or IPhone X?

These models are water resistant to a few feet under water and supposedly splashproof. Does the 2X Accidental Damage coverage of AppleCare Plus include replacement (for a small fee) of the IPhone if its water damaged? I could find no exclusion in the AppleCare Plus contract....but its all legal jargon so I am asking the forum....and would like an Apple Moderator to answer so we know the official policy.

If you have AppleCare+ the two reduced accidental damage claims apply to any accidental damage. Otherwise, base out of warranty repair rates apply.

Water damage voids the warranty on all iPhones. But the AppleCare+ accidental damage claims apply to any warranty voiding accidental damage (other perhgaps then the “catastrophic” damage clause in the warranty, where you no longer actually have an intact iPhone or even all of its pieces).

I'm still not sure what it would be if a phone is run over by a vehicle. I'm sure that someone has dropped a phone on a driveway (where it might have survived with a good case) but then it got run over.

I think as long as it was still in one, or mostly one piece, it may still be eligible. The example they give in the documentation (Legal - Repair Terms and Conditions - Apple) is “...the product separating into multiple pieces, ...”. So crushed but still in one piece may still qualify, while smashed and in many pieces in a zip lock baggie, not so likely.

We do know of posters bringing their iPhone and physically separated display unit in and getting OoW replacements. And if my memory is correct, we’ve had a poster whose phone was run over by a bus or truck when dropped in the street, and they also received OoW Service for the crushed phone.

No. Their claims of being water resistant don’t include a guarantee that it will stay that way. Under AppleCare it would be subject to the accidental damage replacement fee.

About splash, water, and dust resistance of iPhone 7 and later - Apple Support

Your iPhone is splash, water, and dust resistant and was tested under controlled laboratory conditions with a rating of IP67 under IEC standard 60529. Splash, water, and dust resistance are not permanent conditions, and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear. Liquid damage is not covered under warranty.
