You can remove older devices in your device list for Find My iPhone (which I assume is what you mean). Check out this support article for more information under the heading "I see a device that I don't own or use anymore." Just be careful not to delete your active device by accident (although that can be fixed).

Yes, you can delete devices from your Device List: Check your Apple ID device list to see where you're signed in - Apple Support. If you delete one that you are signed into with your Apple ID and the correct level of operating system, it will get added back. Duplicates and devices that are listed but not signed in with your Apple ID, should no longer show up once you delete them.
However, just an FYI. Quite a while ago when this feature was first introduced, I had to remove a device that belonged to my husband (but was initially purchased by me) several times before it would stay off. So, if that happens, just delete it again.

I believe the OP was referring to the Device list on your Apple ID or in iCloud.com, not the list in the Find My iPhone app, based on the support article that the OP linked from.

I believe that you are correct. However, the application in iCloud is still (at least it was the last time I checked) called Find My iPhone and the article I linked to covered (as far as I can tell) both sides of the question. Thank you for pointing that out! 🙂
