What does it mean if only one of the AirPods work? There is no sound at all coming from one.
Please let me know how I can correct this issue or if they should to be returned.

You might need to charge your second AirPod. Check out this article for general AirPods usage information. I hope this helps! If one of your AirPods refuses to work after you charge it, I would take it back into the Apple store to see if you can get hardware support.
I'm not affiliated with Apple, nor do I represent their interests, but I would urge you to try to get them replaced rather than just returning them. I've had mine for several years now and they have been remarkably reliable (and sturdy). I think you just got a lemon.
Same problem with both AirPods at 80 % charge. Will return them!
