Homepod volume control via iTunes or Touchpad?

Got my new HomePod today and I'm curious why I can't control the volume from my Mac via the touchpad or through iTunes. I have to open the modal for output (speaker selection via iTunes) and adjust it there. That isn't very intuitive. Am I missing something?

Yes, perhaps that is an iTunes bug. Now that I think of it, the "master" volume control on the Mac should adjust all selected AirPlay outputs proportionately.

One final comment that you may find useful. If you have the iOS Remote app (the old version with the blue icon, not the new black Remote app for ATV 4) that can be a iOS remote control for your Mac's iTunes, where you can enable/disable AirPlay devices and independently control their volumes. I've used this for parties when I'm AirPlaying to multiple devices around the house, works fabulously.

I am not sure, actually. I don't use any other Airplay devices. But I would expect to be able to control the volume from the standard places that all other devices are.

I'm not at my Mac at the moment, but if iTunes has multiple outputs enabled, in your case your Mac's speaker and HomePod, then perhaps the independent volume control requires using the modal volume control.

You might try unchecking your Mac's audio output in iTunes, leaving the HomePod as the only iTunes output, and see if that changes the behavior.

I have the same problem. It also cannot control airplay (from latest iTunes on a Mac) volume with Siri. Actually, I can drop the volume with either the touchpad or Siri, but not raise it again. If I try to control the volume using the Remote app on my phone, moving the slider for the HomePod fails to adjust the HomePod volume, but it does mess up other outputs. I can control it from the Mac just fine.

I think there's a bug in the HomePod software or iTunes. Hopefully this gets fixed quickly; this is a showstopper for me.

I have found volume control to be non-intuitive. If I'm controlling HomePod with my voice, rather than from a device, Siri has a tough time adjusting volume. I get a small (one-click) response to "Siri, turn down the volume," but a HUGE decibel reduction when I ask Siri to turn down the volume 50%. This is glitchy, and could be fixed through software. I would rather not have to cycle through a dozen identical commands to get the volume where I want it.
