I love my airpods and want to pair them with my Vizio smart tv but am not certain if it will work. Has anyone tried this. The TV is a smart tv with apps and not a smartcast types of tv. I don't have a streaming device because I used my computer network. Can it be done?

If your TV supports bluetooth headphones not many do that I know of, the AirPods should work, though not all features will be available.
There's no harm in trying though. Follow the steps to pair bt headphones to the Tv from the Tv's own manual.
From the AirPods side, just set them in their case, and press the button on the back until the status light flashes white to set them to pairing mode before
