OK, I have the HomePod, and it's really great for my purposes.
I'd really like to place a HomePod on a shelf out of reach and control it with a Siri Remote (a la Apple TV 4K). The Siri Remote would provide me direct volume control in a snap, and instant access to Siri without having to yell across my 50 foot long room.
Anyone have any thoughts on this matter?

At the moment, no. I hope they can at least add HomePod as one of the devices that can be used by the Apple Remote in the future.
Hi I have asked for the same function, at the moment I can control all of my HomeKit accessories, and my Apple Music content via HomePod but not my Apple TV or iTunes movie content?
I have linked my Mac Mini to my HomePod, and playing movies via my iTunes library the sound is fantastic (will probably be getting another one when the pair function is released in 11.3)

Should be possible over Bluetooth, but how would the devices know whether you want to control the TV's volume or the HomePod? Having it control both would seem to be a problem, unless you are using the HomePod for your TV's audio.
I have also submitted feedback on my specific request. I think that it's a simple feature to enable, and that it's overall benefit will be for few people... but for those few, the benefit will be huge!
So, you want a voice controlled Homepod to be controlled by a bluetooth handset like Apple TV? You have already submitted feedback requesting this, so lets see what Apple come up with. Anything is possible.
The point of this post is that I want the Siri Remote to work with the HomePod. I don't desire to fiddle with 4 to 10 button presses in an app that requires me to look at it... when I could just press a single physical button that doesn't require me to look at it.
My intention is to use this HomePod in a space that doesn’t have an Apple TV. I would buy a dedicated Siri Remote just for this HomePod, just for use in this space.
Why not just suggest an update to the Remote app on iPhone or Apple Watch?
