wildcard character to rename files

Using the Finder under MacOS High Sierra, I want to select and then rename several files. I select the "replace text" option. I would like to use a wildcard character. I guessed at "*" and "?". But didn't work. Is there a wildcard character for this function? Am I doing something wrong?

Wildcards are not supported in the Finder. Try this instead, Transnomino. It's free.
