ipad pro keyboard & iOS 11

On an iPhone or iMac, if you want an accent on a letter, you simply hold the letter and you are presented with a range of accents -grave or acute. On the iPad Pro you have to play lucky dip. The fingering combination isn’t even intuitive.

Is it just me that’s frustrated by this.

I’m sure millions of French are just as frustrated.

Please could apple produce a simple fix for this in an update soon.

Thanks,

Iain

Here is what the iPhone User Guide says - directions for the iPhone:

By contrast, here are the iPad directions (from the iPad User Guide):

The methods are somewhat different because of the resulting display after touching and holding the key, but not drastically different in my opinion.

You haven't actually said, but are you talking about using an add-on hardware keyboard? Like Apple's Smart Keyboard? If so, be sure to make that clear when you ask Apple to add the feature you want via

Hardware keyboards can of course be switched to a large number of other language layouts on an iPad, just like on a Mac. And all the standard keyboard option/alt shortcuts for special characters used by Apple for decades should also work. Still it would be nice if they could also activate the Press and Hold accent menu for those users who find that useful.

Hi Sherman,

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my question. You’re absolutely correct if you use the screen’s keyboard.

What I can’t understand is that with every other apple product you can hold down a letter & swipe / choose an accent, but if you’ve forked out a lot of money for the “click on keyboard”, for the iPad, then this standard, simple & intuitive feature doesn’t exist.

I find it strange that the branch of apple development didn’t consider operational experience of other apple keyboards when they designed this keyboard. The keyboard is fine if you only write in English, but if you write in another language i.e. most of the world, then you’ll find the keyboard frustrating - which is a shame as it could be a very useful addition.

I’m hoping that apple will address this shortfall in future iOS updates.

All the best,

Iain
