How to retrieve files from a 'dead' iMac

My iMac (2011 thereabouts) died - not a sound or a flicker - and I've replaced it with a new one. I retrieved files from my Time Machine backup, but not all the folders made it across, and now the old Time Machine back up has been replaced by the new one. A couple of the missing folders are quite important. Any ideas on how I can retrieve them?

Two possibilities:

1. Try booting your old Mac into Target Disk Mode. If it boots that way you may be able to retrieve your data.

2. Remove the hard drive put it in an enclosure and connect it to a working Mac. If your hard drive is working you should be able to retrieve your data that way.
