Numbers SUMIF with not equal

I am trying to use SUMIF(test-values;condition;sum-values) with a condition using the ≠ (not equal) sign, but I don't get the desired result – my locale is German, hence the semi-colon instead of the comma 🙂

Column AColumn B

•••

2
15.02.20183
15.02.20184
•••5
15.02.20181

When I use SUMIF(A1:A5;"≠•••";B1:B5) I get a zero sum (0) even though there are cells within the range A1:A5, which contain a date instead of the 3 bullets and I expect the result to be 8 …

When I use SUMIF(A1:A5;"=•••";B1:B5) with the = (equal) sign, it seems to work properly and I get a result of 7 …

When I use IF(A2≠"•••";B2) on a single cell, the not equal sign seems to work as well and I get a result of 3 …

Any thoughts of what I might be doing wrong? Thanks a lot Apple Community 😉

Try this:

User uploaded file

  • Use "<>" rather than "≠". Numbers does make the conversion in formulas where <> are not presented as 'text', but as you'll not above, not when <> are enclosed in quotes.
  • Use a different marker for lines you do not want included in the sum. Numbers does not seem to recognize that "..." in a cell is 'equal to' "..." in a formula.
