Suddenly cannot send email through any SMTP server

OK, here is the thing...

Mac G5 Dual 1.8
OSX 10.4.8
Everything EXCEPT the latest Security update (the one for quicktime only)

No changes made, no new software installed, no settings changed...

I put it to sleep at night... woke it up the next morning.

Suceesfully RETRIEVED all my email... made and clicked 'send' on a response to one and it displayed the message that the server mail.xxxx.com could not be used to send. The hosting company says they can successfully send from my test account and that the server is fine.

OK, I use several domains for email and the POP/SMTP servers have always been great with this company. But this is just weird....

I can receive my messages... but mail (and entourage I later found) cannot send SMTP output to my servers. And, I cannot Telnet to any SMTP server.

I have rebooted, turned off the firewall, checked my wireless configuration, (OK), Reset PRAM and NVRAM all to no avail... Can anyone point me in the right direction? This is a REAL hair-puller

Thanks for any help
Steed

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I assume this is happening to all Mac people on Road Runner in this area. At least I can RECEIVE email on my Road Runner accounts, I just can't SEND it. And there lies the rub. Anyone have any thoughts on why it's possible to do the one and not the other? Yet, my mac.com accounts work fine for sending and receiving over the same Road Runner ISP.

I'd appreciate any and all thoughts on this if someone in the know has a moment.

Scroll up about 10 or so posts and you will find two more that I posted.

I outline a SOLUTION that I found whuch SOLVED my INABILITY to send email.

Your ETHERNET Packet Switching numbers may be set to a 1500 DEFAULT and need to be lowered.

Check out the DETAILS a few posts before this post.

I have been having this problem for months now, but finally took some time to solve it this afternoon.

I was puzzled why my iPhone 3G was able to send outgoing messages from my .mac account when connect to my Airport Express without a problem, yet my PB G4 running 10.4.11 and Mail v2.1.3 could not.

So I checked the settings, and the outgoing server settings on my iPhone were set to port 587, with SSL on. When I changed the settings in Mail on my PB G4, I was able to send outgoing messages.

The BTYahoodotcom/smtp website provides an explanation WHY outgoing mail isn't being sent from a Mac but the only solution offered involves the use of Entourage.
I have spent over two hours on the phone in the last 24 hours to BT's Delhi call centre - that included 15 minutes in which they were remotely connected to my Mac to confirm the settings. (That could, incidentally only be achieved by also connecting my Windows machine, which fortunately still works).
Their final 'solution' was that the BT smtp server is down and 'may not be restored for 24 hours'.
They seemed to be unaware of the new BT requirement for smtp server users to have verification.
In my Mac Mail system the port seems to be automatically linked to the server choice for smtp servers.
