Why is middle C marked C3 and not C4?

I don’t know if I’ve got my music theory skills all in a twist but I could swear that middle C is supposed to be C4. Garage band’s had it marked as C3 for years so I’m wondering if there’s maybe a different system that they use? I’m really confused.
