How to get past missing index.xml file message

I cannot open an iBook file to edit the book. I last saved the book on Feb. 3rd, 17 days ago, and am now not able to open the very same file. The message I get when I try to open it through iBooks Author or through the book on my desktop are the same.

User uploaded file

I can see that the (.iba) extension is showing on the file name. Is it possible that the latest update I have done on my computer has halted my ability to open this book? If so, now what do I do?

Does anyone know how to get past this?

System updates should not have affected the source file.

It looks like a damaged iBooks Author file.

Can you open other .iba files or create, save ad open new files created in iBooks Author ?
