Closing laptop lid during update (didn't seem to hurt anything)

While rushing off to work my MacBook Pro unexpectedly began updating High Sierra - despite me pressing the install "later" option about 30 minutes earlier. I had to get in the car and go immediately so I just grumbled a bit, closed the lid and took off. About half an hour later I got to work and opened my MacBook Pro. It was fine. There was a normal screen asking if data can be shared with Apple for improvements (like when there's a crash). It seemed to be the normal screen when you update the system.

I was worried I'd bungle up my MacBook Pro - but to my surprise closing the lid during this update didn't seem to hurt it a bit. I did have a backup from the night before.

Anyway - is that normally oaky to do? Close the lid while there's an update running?

Yes. Apple might not consider all the possible things people might do, but that's one of them. It causes a normal sleep event and that's anticipated.
