10.13.3 supplemental update bricked my iMac. Tried it twice.

Anyone else have a problem updating your mac with the 10.13.3 supplemental update?

I had to nuke and pave my computer after 2 failed attempts.

After download and install, it rebooted and hung up on the progress bar near the end. Left it on all night, no change. Had to use TM BU to get computer back to normal. Ran all utilities like Onyx etc, then tried it again. Same thing happened.

No problems here with either of my Macs.

I suggest you use the program created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. It will provide a snapshot of your system which we can analyze to possibly determine the cause of your problem. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Same exact thing happened to me. Twice. Restoring from Time Machine Backup was also the only solution (which I didn't try at first instead of 2 failed attempts at reinstalling macOS from the 'Restore' partition [which mind-bogglingly also hung at about the 50-75% complete mark each time, and which I frustratingly had no option to use the already downloaded macOS updater I had stored locally on one of my hard drives - so I had to download it all over again], because I mistakenly figured a reinstall would be faster than restoring from a Time Machine Backup...) I'm just glad I didn't lose any precious data.

After this debacle which left my 27" iMac (2010) in an unusable state for the last 48 hours, I'm skipping the Supplemental Update for now. Not worth the risk or the hassle. Very disappointed in Apple, but sadly not surprised. The update process in general seems to have degenerated into the digital equivalent of Russian Roulette over the last several years.

Same thing twice on my late 2012 Macbook Pro. This recent supplemental update and another before Xmas.

The first time required me to format and reinstall my entire macOS from scratch. The progress bar stalled 90% of the way for the entire day. Tech support had told me that my hard drive had failed, but it still showed up unscathed in recovery. Lucky I didn't follow their advice and buy an entire new one.

I had to partition and reinstall everything from scratch, and forget about all my priceless photos and documents.

Always have a Time Machine back up ready is all I can say.

Mar 3, 2018 10:17 PM in response to MonsieurObscure

My Mac did the same thing and it crashes everytime I install the supplemental update from scratch. Progress bar would go 90% and then hang. I'm lucky to have made a TM BU from about two weeks ago. But everything past that is ruined. Thanks Apple. I hope you get it fixed quick!

Same problems as all the people who had problems.

Hangs for hours. No sign of progress after progress bar tops out.

Couldn't enter Safe mode. And someone who did download in safe mode has the same problem anyways....

Checked disks with System Recover - all's fine.

End state: I'll take this security risk instead of the apparent certainty that this MBPro will not work at all.

Not what I expect from Apple -

Esp after having our other MBPro hacked after High Sierra left the root directory open.....

Mar 19, 2018 11:07 AM in response to randy@brussels

What solved it for me was:

- Download the 10.13.3 supplemental update on another machine

- Boot in safe mode and copy the 10.13.3 to my iMac

- Run the installation - be prepared to wait! I was desperate already talking to Apple support when suddenly the progress bar moved. They told me that this update takes a long time, depending on how much data you are using on your hard drive. I had 750 GBytes and it must have taken around 2 hours. I think this is something Apple should warn us about when providing the update, no?!

Good luck

Hi, I'm spending far too much time trying to get this 10.13.3 supplemental update to install. I don't know how many times I've tried.

Have tried downloading and installing the update in safe mode. Have disabled Avast anti-virus. Uninstalled Avast and Chrome. This has been going on for weeks. Done disk first aid. Cleared caches. Tried various reboot options... Now considering disabling updates for some peace and productivity.

I'd really appreciate some help with this.

Hi again - just when I was about to give up I managed to resolve it.

In short I did an Internet Recovery reinstall of latest version of High Sierra but made sure no peripherals were connected to the MBP during the reboots.

Then installed the supplemental update, again no peripherals, and it worked.

I found solution in this thread: 10.13.3 Suplemental Update failure loop | Discussion | Jamf Nation

My situation was different to yours - I'm using a MacBook Pro, and my machine wasn't 'bricked' by the process - but it was annoying every time I restarted my machine for weeks getting the hover message that updates couldn't be installed. It should not have been that difficult.

Shouldn't get to the point where users like me and mrsbeefy above disable updates out of frustration. Mac's famed 'security' is meaningless if we have to choose between enabling updates and getting on with our work. I'm not an engineer, but from the Jamf thread it seems even the engineers were flummoxed.

Reminds me of the old days when I spent half my life troubleshooting Windows.

Best of luck with it.

10.13.3 supplemental update bricked my iMac. Tried it twice.
