fontworker and fontd processes using 90% CPU

There are two processes (fontworker and fontd) that are using 90% or more of my CPU processing power. My iMac system (27-inch, Late 2012) is running VERY slow. Why is this? How can I stop these processing from using all my CPU? I am running Mac OS High Sierra (ver 10.13.3) on a 2.9GHz Intel Core i5 with 8GB of memory.

Any insight/assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
