iMac slow down after 4 wonderful years

I suspect my daily use has accumulated hundreds of thousands of files of which the Mac must keep track. The Fusion Drive had previously been fast. Now ordinary screen and display functions take noticeably longer, even as apps do OK. Every previous Mac and MacBook has reached a similar point. I use Disk Utility and Cocktail to keep things healthy. Question: has anyone experienced similar, then backed up applications and files, wiped computer clean, reinstalled MacOS from scratch, and then brought back all the personal & business files plus reinstalled applications? Did yours get back its speed?

Good morning PeterBphoto,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand you are experiencing some sluggishness with your iMac and are wondering if taking the time to up clean up files, backup your computer and possibley restore it back to factory settings will cause it to run faster. Unless there is a hardware issue or corrupt software, a little spring cleaning will almost always provide performance benefits for your Mac.
The first step is to make sure you have a backup of your computer - two backups would be even better. I use Time Machine to back up my entire system, and will usually copy my large photo, music and video libraries along with any critical documents to a second local external drive.
How to use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac
The next step is to make sure your computer's operating system and applications are updated to the most recent version.
Make sure whatever hardware you have connected to your computer has the most updated sofware drivers.
How to update the software on your Mac
Check the storage capacity of your iMac. If it is getting too full, consider moving large files to an external drive. SSD drives (both internal and external) will significantly improve performance over regular platter-based hard drives.
macOS Sierra: If your Mac runs slowly
How to free up storage space on your Mac
You may also want to consider a RAM upgrade, especially if you are updating to macOS High Sierra, and/or work with memory intensive applications.
iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) - Technical Specifications

Memory
8GB (two 4GB) of 1600MHz DDR3 memory; four user-accessible SO-DIMM slots. Configurable to 16GB or 32GB.
Storage
1TB (7200-rpm) hard drive. Configurable to 3TB hard drive, 1TB or 3TB Fusion Drive, or 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB of flash storage.

If, after doing these initial steps, your iMac still feels a little sluggish, then erasing the hard drive, reinstallling the operating system, and only transferring the applications and documents that you need using Migration Assistant will certainly make your computer feel like new again.
Consider the instructions below to make sure you are covering all of the bases:
What to do before you sell or give away your Mac
Take care.

QuickKeyLaunchHelper SMLoginItem (Mac App Store - installed 2018-03-30)

Are you still using QuickKeys? It became incompatible with the OS X a couple of systems ago. I had to go to Keyboard Maestro to have the same functions (and much more I found out).

If you're not using it uninstall it according to the developer's instructions. If it's working as advertised ignore the above.

Growl: this isn't needed as the OS X has an excellent builtin notification system. I'd uninstall it.

Dropbox: is taking a fair amount of system resources working in the background. You can reduce that drain on resources by disabling it's automatic integration with the system and use it manually.

Memory Clean: this app is unnecessary and can be at odds with the systems build-int memory management. Uninstall it.

Good points! Growl & Memory Clean are gone. Dropbox I use extensively for clients and my own use. That one stays as is. 16 GB RAM has shipped and on the way. There is QuicKeys by Startly (the one you mention, I think) and QuickKey by LittleFin LLC (the one I use). Additionally in late 90's and early 00's I had QuicKeys by CE Software. I looked at Keyboard Maestro. Many, many features! Thank you again.

Problem: Computer is too slow

Description:

After 4+ years, my iMac has noticeably slowed down: ordinary screen and display functions take longer. I suspect an over accumulation of junk, cruft, and files.

Major Issues:

Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.

Kernel panics - This system has experienced kernel panics. This could be a sign of hardware failure.

Minor Issues:

These issues do not need immediate attention but they may indicate future problems.

Clean up - There are orphan files that could be removed.

Unsigned files - There is unsigned software installed. They appear to be legitimate but should be reviewed.

System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.

Low performance - EtreCheck report took over 5 minutes to run. This is unusual.

32-bit Apps - This machine has 32-bits apps that may have problems in the future.

The top item I see is your system may benefit from upgrading the RAM to 16+ GB. 8 GB is now considered the bare minimum amount of RAM to have installed when running newer versions of Mac OS. I would upgrade by adding 2ea. 8GB DIMMs to the empty slots which will upgrade your machine to 24GB. If you choose to do this please only purchase RAM from either www.crucial.com or www.macsales.com. The reason being is iMacs are sensitive to using quality RAM and both vendors only sell high quality products, provide excellent service and have reasonable prices. Upgrading RAM will not cause a dramatic improvement in speed however it should help based on the report you provided.

I see your computer has Crashplan installed, this comes with a performance price as all on-line backup plans tend to slow down performance. While they do have their place, they also come with a price. You may want to consider a local backup using redundancy, what I and many other experienced users use is Time Machine on one backup EHD and then create a bootable clone on a second EHD using either SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner.

Apr 10, 2018 3:09 PM in response to PeterBphoto

You also have an inordinate number of login items which will obviously slow down the computer; there is no need for that - you can simply launch an app when you actually need it.

Cocktail and any other "cleaning" app (apps that claim to clean up your system, files, etc) are to be used cautiously. Why? Because Macs and the latest OS versions do a great job of that already in the background and any third party app will modify the system in order to do whatever it does (Note in the report: a large number of system modifications are installed). And no, I do not have an original document re. Cocktail; do a search here in the forums on "cleaning" apps.

Apr 11, 2018 7:13 AM in response to babowa

Thank you again for your thoughts and advice. I followed your excellent suggestion to search the forum for cleaning apps, specifically Cocktail. After reading the 12th message thread and finding nothing but hearsay and unsubstantiated advice to get rid of it, I concluded in the absence of anything factual and verifiable, I'll keep it. Such is the power of urban rumor and repetition from one person to another. I've had it since 2004 or so (previous Macs). I had it 4+ years ago when there was no slow down problem. Also, the number of login items has no effect on the Mac speed throughout the day––it only affects the length of login itself. Login time is not part of the slow down problem I described. Keep working at it!

Apr 11, 2018 8:02 AM in response to PeterBphoto

Your computer = your decision.

FWIW, of course we are all other users here, so we relate our experiences and knowledge and we are supposed to test answers on our own devices. Personally, I've run a week's worth of testing to see if and which Mac OS version can be reinstalled on (now older) pre-Lion Macs. I also trust the combined vast (and amazing) knowledge of long time contributors here. However, no one is infallible.

Just a thought: how would you verify and check facts if I told you that my computer kept crashing, but was finally ok after I removed some third party software? You'd immediately assume I made that up? These are technical support forums, it is not Twitter.

Also, the number of login items has no effect on the Mac speed throughout the day––it only affects the length of login itself.

I actually knew that. It was merely a suggestion; since you're not accepting others' thoughts, just ignore.

Good luck!
