Brand new iMac very slow, help?

Hello everyone,

I don't know if this is common but here it goes:

I got a brand new iMac two weeks ago (specs on the bottom of the post), and restored everything I had on my previous iMac from my Time Machine. It is always running slower than I expected, almost as slow as my 2007 iMac (previous one). Is anyone else experiencing this? Is this normal? Should I do a clean install and lose all the benefits of time machine backups - rendering them pointless?

Also, I know macs aren't made for videogames but having a game completely freeze my computer when the system requirements for it are about half of what I've got shouldn't be normal either, right? I end up having to do a cold restart (hold start button for 10 seconds), which can't be good for it.

Someone please tell me this isn't normal.

Please help!

Mac specs:

Retina 4K Display
1TB Storage

3.0GHz quad-core 7th-generation Intel Core i5 processor

8GB 2400MHz memory

1TB hard drive

Radeon Pro 555 with 2GB video memory

iMac, iOS 11.2.6, null

I suggest you use the program created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. It will provide a snapshot of your system which we can analyze to possibly determine the cause of your problem. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Hi

Me too with similar configuration experiencing the same. Purchased it in September 2017, struggling with it after trying out moat of the support option.

When you open an app it just keeps on jumping for 3 to 5 mins before opening. Sometimes you see the beach ball rotating.

This seems to be reported by many who have not opted for the high end model with fusion drive.

Apple support makes you do the common troubleshooting with no luck.

I thing technical team should buy one and use them for

sometime to understand customers frustration.

I suppose the only option is to upgrade to fusion drive. The OS seems to be not fine tuned for the hardware used in mid range models that do not come with fusion drive or there seems to be some serious issue with the disk read.

Probably you can try your luck with tech support. I personally feel they should do a recall of the HDD Used in mid and low end iMac model or best provide a fusion drive upgrade free of cost time and effort spend by customers troubleshooting the device.

This was my first iMac and would recommend to All please don't buy mid and low end model. Go for the one with fusion drive, as that sems to have less issues.

This is clear hardware problem as it works worse than my 4 year old Windows laptop.

Hope Apple is listening to All comments in the forums and support existing users and also do something better for the new releases.

Regards

Pete

Hi! Thank you for the reply, I just wanted to let you know that I agree with you Pete.

It's very sad that we pay a lot for a mid range computer and then it doesn't live up to Apple standards and our expectations. I can't work properly, I can't play a videogame (yes I know Macs aren't built for videogames).

I don't know what is wrong with the computer but I'm starting to notice a pattern, and it seems to all be related to the HDD as you mentioned, it's what everyone seems to be complaining about.

They should definitely do something, it really isn't fair to pay this much for a mid range and have it under perform, as you'd expect from a lower range.

Good morning Allan,

I had my computer taken to an Apple rep so they could check the situation and all I got was "this is normal, it's doing what it's supposed to do". The second I open Safari there goes the ram, imagine opening something heavier, like inDesign. Colour wheels all around!

They did say if I had got a Fusion drive it would have solved it, so I don't know what else to think.

Cheers,
