My iMessage will not open....

I can see Messages on the icon, but when I open iMessage it says, "An internal Messages error occurred." It tells me to Quit and Open again; however, that does not work and I keep getting the same message. It worked a few weeks ago, but now this is happening. Does anyone else have experience with this??
