photos' portrait settings lost when transferred from iphone x to macbook pro

My photos' portrait settings are lost when uploaded to my MacBook via iCloud. How do I retain those settings? I texted some of those photos to my family and the image in the message shows those retained their portrait qualities.

iPhone X, iOS 11.2.6

You need Photos 3.0 on High Sierra to be able to see the portrait effect of a photo.

Change the lighting of a portrait in Photos on Mac - Apple Support


You could duplicate a portrait photo on your iPhone and edit the copy - apply a crop or a lighting adjustment, then save the edited copy as new photo. This copy will have the effect burned in as a simple JPEG.
