Buying 2nd hand iphone

Hi, I’m considering buying a 2nd hand iphone, but in dilemma whether should I go for it or not.

Say, I buy an iphone from someone who has 12/24 months contract with EE/Three or any other network. When I bought the iPhone it was in a sealed pack & wasn’t activated, so I logged in with my apple ID. What happens if after few months the user make insurance claim stating he lost his iphone or if he doesn’t pay for his contract and the network provider tries to lock the iphone? Am I screwed then ?

Question about activate I bought an iPhone for my friend. However, I have wait 2 months to go back home and then give this iPhone to him. How will the warranty calculate if he activate the iPhone later than purchased date?
