airport will not recognise existing backup disc

airport has not run a back up for 3 weeks as it will not recognise the airport disc.

Airport Time Capsule I have a I tb Airport Time Capsule in my system. It is my backup disk and is being used as a distribution device for several ethernet connected devices around my home because I do not have enough plugs in my modem. It appears the disc is full and my backups have stopped. I was under the impression from my Time Machine information in Preferences that "the oldest backups are deleted when your disk becomes full" and that I could just use my current setup indefinitely accepting the fact that old stuff is deleted. I have checked this out and it appears my impression may be incorrect and I may need a new backup device. To further complicate things I am told that Apple have discontinued manufacture of the Airport Time Capsule. So my questions are: Do I need a new backup disk or should my current setup keep going deleting old stuff as it becomes full? If I need a new one what is a good replacement for the Airport Time Capsule that includes the distribution function or do I need to do that in a different way.
