how can I speed up my 2009 mac - keeps beachballing and I have 4GB ram in

My Etrereport says my mac is upgradeable but I think 4 GB is it's max. It's got 2 x 2GB 1067 mHz DDR3.

I can't really use the machine at the moment but I don't know why it is so slow.

Get rid of CleanMyMac - instructions: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/7609452?answerId=30410136022#30410136022

Low RAM doesn't help but CMM is probably what's doing it.

I read Chrome is a resource hog and not something you want to run on an older computer.

An ssd would speed up startup and application launch dramatically, BUT, your biggest problems are CleanMyMac (Brick my Mac) and a lack of ram. Your 2010 Macbook can be upgraded easily to as much as 16Gb. You should only consider quality ram from either OWC Apple Mac Upgrades - RAM, SSD Flash, External Drives and More or Crucial http://www.crucial.com/ as other brands are likely to cause kernel panics.

Before you do anything uninstall CMM per the developers instructions How to uninstall CleanMyMac 3. Knowledge Base

It wasn't wrong at time that Apple stated it but it's out dated. OWC has tested their ram up to 16Gb in your exact model and guarantees it's compatibility.

While Apple states that High Sierra will run in 4Gb of ram they're correct but trying to run anything else will result in the spinning beachball and poor performance. In reality you need a minimum of 8Gb of ram and 16 is better. Upgrading is easy, here's a step by step illustrated guide MacBook Unibody Model A1342 RAM Replacement - iFixit

Once again, only use ram from a quality vendor like the ones I suggested earlier.

Thanks - I have removed Clean my Mac and it has made a difference. I would like to upgrade my RAM but when I looked into it further it looked like Apple says mine mac cannot be upgraded beyond 4GB. Do you think this is wrong? FCC ID: QDS-BRCM1047 and IC 4324A-BRCM1047

There are a lot of cases where Apple claims a certain maximum capacity but it's well know that it's incorrect. For instance it's well known that my 2007 MacBook is capable of supporting up to 6 GB, but Apple has never officially supported more then 4 GB. In your case 16 GB has been tested as working by OWC. Crucial.com sells an 8GB kit.
