You can try erasing the device in the settings. Backup first with iCloud, then restore the backup.
I prefer using iTunes because iTunes will download and install a new, clean copy of the iOS software whereas erasing the device in the settings will not download another copy of the iOS. That’s not to say that it won’t help, I just don’t think it is as effective as using iTunes
